Weekly Update October 5, 2018

What’s New in the OMC Family:

This was an exciting week for the “GRIFFIN” Family.  WE hosted our “Grand Opening” ceremony and our first ever BTSN.  We had a full house and it was wonderful to see all the support from our district staff.  Board Members, Executive Cabinet, Principals. Directors, Coordinators, LDC’s and other Staff members joined the celebration.  We also had the entire Executive Cabinet from Oxnard College attending.  Students and parents enjoyed visiting with Teachers and we had 92% of students participating in the event.  Students took pride in welcoming the guiding all visitors and our ASB President lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  We also hosted our first School Site Council Meeting.  I attended Principals’ meeting this Monday and had the opportunity to participate in an activity on 7 Components of Effective Equity Agenda lead by Dr. DeLeon.  We will be including these components in our agenda.  I participated in the October ACSA meeting and will be sharing information with all administration to promote the Student Essay contest.  “GO GRIFFINS”

English: This week, in English students began drafting their argument essays about the impact of technology on communication.  They are receiving teacher feedback for each step of the writing process and are becoming more confident writers.

AVID: In AVID, students worked through the Khan Academy mission about making the most of high school, covering the topics of extracurricular activities and the SAT vs the ACT.  They also utilize the Oxnard College tutoring center and library study rooms to maintain their organization and study habits.

ASB: Led by the ASB president, the Associated Student Body met this week to discuss and commit to a Griffin Motto.  The following statement represents the student consensus:

Students discussed specific strategies, criteria and expectations for success in all these areas.  They also spent some time in class, meeting with clubs, developing teamwork under the leadership of the Vice President, and preparing for the OMCHS Grand Opening and Back to School Night.

Counseling: This week our counselor confirmed our first college trip to take place at California Lutheran University on October 26th, 2018.  The students will be participating in a guided tour of the university, followed by an admission and financial aid presentation.  We want our students to learn about all systems of higher education and are excited to visit one of our local universities!  At Back-to-School Night, our counselor will meet parents, share her role and the topics she will be covering with the students throughout school year.  Parents will also have the opportunity to make an appointment with our counselor.
