Weekly Update March 22, 2019

What’s New in the OMC Family:

Our district professional development day was a great way to start the week.  I had the opportunity to participate in sessions and later at OMCHS campus we had an AVID training for our teachers and staff.  We have been busy meeting with parents and students on registration for summer school and dual enrollment classes with OC.  I participated in the Sonny Magana training on  Tuesday and participated in the SPSA meeting at the district.  This Thursday we hosted coffee with the Counselor Meeting and provided parents with information on high school and college classes for next year.  Advanced Placement has made updates on the services they provide and have changed the registration process and deadlines.  This week I worked on creating a plan of action to roll out the new process for AP test registration and support system.  We will be informing our community on the new deadlines.  Teachers and students need to be trained on accessing online supports like “myAP” and the new online registration system for AP exams.

Leadership: A few of our OMCHS students volunteered to greet faculty and staff at our annual district-wide Oxnard Union High Professional Development Summit.  The Griffins welcomed the teachers, administrators, and staff from around the district to the event guiding them to complimentary coffee provided by instructional support services.  We are proud of our students for stepping up as student leaders!

English: This week in English, students shared their library database research.  Given a choice board, students created a product to share with classmates.  These products included infographics, sketchnotes, précis, spark videos, and screencasts.  Students added their products to their digital portfolios.

AVID: In AVID this week, students continued their discussion of cell phone addiction, reading an infographic, participating in a QFT, and completing a written reflection.

ASB: The Griffins enjoyed spirit week dress up days and activities!  We had fun with games, a green screen challenge, and a breakoutEDU escape room!

Medical Terminology: Students learned about reflexes and even learned to test each other’s knee jerk reflex!

Counseling: This week our counselor held our second “Coffee with the Counselor” event on Thursday March 21st. Mrs. Sand presented to the families on Canvas, the learning management system used by Oxnard College. She shared strategies with parents on how they can support their student at home and check-in with them regarding their progress in their Oxnard College Geography class. She also covered the differences between a high school transcript and college transcript. Lastly, she shared what their schedule will look like sophomore year.
