It was nice meeting you all at Back to School Night! I wish we would have had more time to visit.
Since Back to School Night, we have been working on tutorials, PSAT preparation through Khan Academy, and thinking about social issues in our community:
- We have studied the AVID tutorial process, which involves reviewing our schoolwork, identifying points of confusion, and then using inquiry to help each other clarify those points of confusion. We had our first real tutorial this week. Students will be participating in tutorials twice a week from here on, either on Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays.
- We have set up all students online with the College Board and Khan Academy. All students are required to complete at least 30 minutes of PSAT preparation per week through Khan Academy online. Of course, more practice is recommended. The PSAT exam will be administered on Wednesday, October 16, during the school day at OMCHS. Once students have taken the PSAT, (like the current 10th graders) they will be assigned exercises in Khan Academy that are related to their performance to the test, customizing their practice to their needs.
- We have also been preparing for our service learning projects. We thought about our personal interests, skills, and talents; our personal and global experiences with social issues; and how our lives might be different if those issues were resolved. We did a critical reading of the poem, “Imagine the Angels of Bread,” by Martín Espada to help us consider the role of imagination in problem solving. Now we are bringing all of those things together – how can we use our interests, skills, talents, and imaginations to support our communities? We are starting to work in groups around our areas of interest – narrowing down our topics and thinking about possible projects. Next we will be doing some research to make sure that what we have in mind will be as useful as possible to our communities.
Thank you for your support and for sharing your students with us!
Mrs. Sand will be reviewing progress grades and meeting with students to review their academic progress thus far. On Friday, Mrs. Sand will also be attending the Cash for College event at Oxnard College. This event will provide a comprehensive overview of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), updates on the California Dream Act Application, and information about the Cash for College program.
