OMCHS Weekly Update!

Message from the Principal

This week our students started their campaigns for ASB officers.  It is wonderful to see how excited they are about taking leadership roles at OMCHS.  Our staff is working and preparing for our Grand Opening celebration scheduled for October 4th at 6:00pm.  I met with students this week to review behavior rules and expectations and get their input as we work together on creating a culture of positive behaviors and supports.  I was invited by E.O. Green this week to provide two presentations about Oxnard Middle College.  I presented at their regularly scheduled parent meeting “Coffee with the Principal” and later on I presented to their AVID 8th grade class.

What’s New in the OMC Family

This week in English, students continued working on critical reading and rhetorical analysis writing.  Students also began our current unit of study, which will emphasize inquiry into the impacts of digital technology on communication.  We read a provocative piece, “Stop Googling.  Let’s Talk” by Sherry Turkle.

In addition to organization and tutorial time, this week AVID students created long-term and short-term goals.  They began the process of investigating universities , majors, careers, and life goals.  They also made commitments to themselves about specific strategies and study skills they will use now in order to achieve their powerful futures.

In ASB this week, students compiled a list of clubs, activities, and community service opportunities they would like to participate in during the year.  The also began the process of setting up an executive board.  We look forward to speeches, campaigning and elections in the next few weeks.

The past few weeks, OMCHS students have been leaning about the resources available to them on collegeboard.org and khanacademy.org, whick include PSAT tesy prep.  Students have also reviewed what the PSAT entails, as well as the format of the exam.  Our counselor has also met with our students to review their progress in their college course and to go over CANVAS (a learning management system used by Oxnard College).  Go Griffins!

Medical Terminology

Students are currently learning about the skeletal system.  As each week continues these students will enhance their skills by understanding the language in the medical field.
