What’s New in the OMC Family:
English: This week in English, students continued to read March by Congressmen John Lewis. They participated in Socratic style classroom discussions and wrote literary analysis pieces. In the discussions, students identified themes, symbols, and moments of historical significance. They also provided textual evidence and counterarguments for their own claims and that of peers.
AVID: AVID took a critical look at how o identify credible sources while doing research. We emphasized the importance of checking author credentials, cross-referencing facts, and taking a critical eye to primary sources and hyperlinks. Students also worked on identifying claims and evidence within credible sources. We used a Newsela article about NFL’s role on player conduct to examine claims on two sides of an argument.
ASB: The Associated Student Body was led by Ms. Hernandez in developing student learning outcomes. The Griffins have a major voice in the continued process of developing these expectations with the faculty and leadership team. We also started our unit on Kindness and Empathy with some group activities.
Counseling: Last week our counselor met with students to get an update on their college course and to monitor their progress. Mrs. Sand will meet with the remaining students this week. This Friday, she will also meet with students during their AVID period to present on a career interest profiler. This profiler helps students discover their interest and how they relate to the world of work.
