Thanks for stopping by the Oxnard Middle College website! Be sure to check in every week for news from around campus. This week’s Friday update comes from Mrs. Guthrie! We are wrapping up the first quarter here at Oxnard Middle College. Our first quarter ends on October 16th and grades will be mailed home on October 22nd. Please check Parent VUE for up to date grades and don’t hesitate to contact any of the faculty, staff, or administration if you have any questions or concerns! We are also sending Parent Square announcements and individual messages, so be sure to contact the office if you need help with the app or website.
Freshmen English wrote fantastic argument papers about the impact of technology on communication. Students had voice and choice in topics, which ranged from the impact of textese, social media, catfishing, memes, and much more! The academic emphasis was on building arguments using credible research from the Oxnard College library databases, formatting in MLA, and supporting evidence with sufficient reasoning. After students completed the essays, they created projects to share their findings with classmates. The presentations and creations were outstanding! Projects emphasized student choice and included videos, infographics, brochures, whiteboard animations, and more! You can see a few samples below. I encourage all students to show off their hard work to their families!
Sophomore students worked very hard on compare and contrast compositions that related a classic poem and database research. They also participated in a poetry choice project performing poetry out loud, giving a poetry lecture, or writing original poetry. These presentations were also stellar! Students were excited to share their hard work with their classmates, teachers, and Ms. Hernandez who came to watch and celebrate their achievements.
We are thankful to all of the generous benefactors from donorschoose.org that donated $500 worth of books to our classroom library! Many of the books didn’t even make it to the shelves! Students checked them out directly from the box.
Mrs. Guthrie represented OMCHS as a presenter and participant at Gold Coast CUE’s TeachTober Conference and EdCamp Hueneme. She led sessions on canvas and student-created digital portfolios.
