Students continue to move forward with their service learning projects, tutorials, guest speakers, and focused note taking. A few have already started doing work in the community, like Heidi, who helped legal residents fill out their paperwork for citizenship at the Oxnard College Swap Meet in October. She is interested in a career in law and will continue to do this on the last Sunday of each month working with the immigration attorneys who also volunteer their services. Stephanie is interested in a career in engineering. She applied to be a Habitat for Humanity Youth Ambassador, and was accepted! She is looking forward to her first meeting with the group. Draven, Xavier, Genesis, Caitlyn, and Elias will be trained soon to work with Buddy Break, a monthly Parents’ Day Out/respite program for kids with special needs and their siblings. OMCHS is making a difference in the community!
In addition, we have analyzed how we spend our time during the week. Each student has come up with a proposed, ideal weekly schedule to help finish the semester strong and healthy.
Our current unit is about applying for jobs. We have listed our extracurricular activities, updated our resumes, written sample job objectives, filled out sample job applications, and are starting to write cover letters. Next we will work on letters of recommendation and practice doing interviews.
In addition, Ms. Guthrie and I are collaborating with the Ventura County Arts Council on bringing “Poetry Out Loud” to OMCHS, as we have both done poetry units this year The goal of Poetry Out Loud is to advance spoken poetry among high school students through oral interpretations of published poems. Our Mentor Poet from VCAC will be visiting today, November 15, to introduce students to the program. We will have a school-wide competition around mid-January, and the OMCHS winner will compete at the county level in February with potential to go even further! You can read more about the program at http://vcartscouncil.org/programs/poetry-out-loud/.
Our Fall Festival was postponed to today due to the fires. I’m looking forward to the pot luck and door decorating contest. The doors look amazing. It will be tough picking a winner!
It has been a very productive week for our students. Today, 100% of our students completed the registration process for classes with Oxnard College for second semester. Please talk with your son/daughter about the classes they are taking. Additionally, our Counselor will be providing complete details about the progress of our students with their college units and their schedule of classes for Spring semester 2020 during “Coffee with the Counselor” It is important that you attend the next session.
Today, our district started the new flooring project in our cafeteria/multipurpose room. The project will be completed by Thursday next week the latest. The rest of the classrooms are scheduled to get new tile this December.
Tomorrow we are hosting Fall Festival with our students. We will also be celebrating Student of the quarter tomorrow.
