Weekly Update January 17, 2020

Happy New Year! Thank you for stopping by to check out our Friday update! We value the home and school partnership; please let us know if you have any questions or if we can help you or your student navigate the new semester! Here is a snapshot of recent events on campus from Mrs. Guthrie’s perspective:

Freshmen English students are starting the semester with a unit on academic honesty. They have been learning how to read and write about both qualitative and quantitative data through a close study of academic articles and infographics. Students will soon begin a paper and project that takes a stand on the issues and proposes solutions.

Most of the sophomore class had the opportunity to attend a field trip to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last Friday. We had a fantastic tour guide who got students excited about all of the opportunities that any university will hold for them. Students seemed to appreciate Cal Poly’s learn by doing approach to education. Our next field trip is scheduled for February 14th for both Freshmen and Sophomores, and we will be traveling to the University of California at Santa Barbara. Thank you so our counselor Mrs. Sand for organizing these trips!

Poetry Out Loud:

Oxnard Middle College had our inaugural Poetry Out Loud competition organized by Dr. Stephenson and coached by Channel Islands alum Angelina Leaños. We are so proud of all of our performers! Congratulations to our winner, sophomore Leslie Lopez and our runner-up freshmen Sophia Viorato! They will advance to the county competition with the strength of all of our support behind them. Special shout out to LDC Mona Piñon and Director Marianne Ramos who came to help judge the competition!

Rose Parade:

Over the winter break, Dr. Stephenson and Mrs. Guthrie had the opportunity to take several students down to the Pasadena area to work on a Rose Parade float with the Chinese American Veterans group. It was a fun and meaningful volunteer opportunity! We hope to make this a tradition.

ELAC and School Site Council:

We had a great turn out for ELAC and School Site Council this week where we discussed updates from DLAC, how to read transcripts, PSAT scores, new schedules for second semester, and more. All parents are encouraged to attend the School Site Council and Coffee with a Counselor. Please see our website or call the school for a schedule of dates and times.
