Weekly Update February 28, 2020

Weekly Update Photo

Thank you for visiting Oxnard Middle College’s website for a Friday update! We are proud to share so many exciting things happening around our campus:

Students at Work:

In English, 9th-grade students have been working on a unit in academic honesty. They analyzed a variety of texts, infographics, and articles, in addition to completing a self-study to collect qualitative and quantitative data. Individually, students wrote argument papers that took a look at the issues of academic honesty and proposed solutions. After going through the writing process, students worked collaboratively to select a subject, audience, and message to help promote academic honesty through awareness or advocacy. Here are some outstanding student projects:

Newscast 2 about how students need to take responsibility for their own academic honesty even while acknowledging pressures on them.

African American History Month:

The Griffins celebrated African-American excellence this month with inspirational videos from prominent African Americans from many walks of life as well as articles and reflections. Students were also encouraged to attend activities at the Oxnard Library and Oxnard College.

Open House 2020:

Oxnard Middle College hosted Open House, which was well attended. Thank you to Dr. McCoy and James Koenig from the District Office who came to support us as well as all of our families and students. We had brief remarks from Ms. Hernandez and Dr. McCoy, followed by student recognition. The students were the stars of the night leading their parents in student-led conferences. Each student created a google site digital portfolio with work samples and reflections from each of their classes. They shared these portfolios with families along with goals and challenges. It was wonderful to see the home and school partnership flourish! These portfolios are part of a 4-year project that we look forward to watching grow.

Wellness Wednesdays:

We have a new club on campus! In addition to Yearbook and Crochet club, one of our sophomores recently started a wellness club, which meets in Mrs. Guthrie’s class at lunch on Wednesdays to de-stress and practice positive wellness strategies! We are so proud of our Griffins who are advocating for themselves and others!

UCSB Fieldtrip:

Oxnard Middle College Freshmen and Sophomores had the opportunity to hear a presentation and take a guided walking tour of the University of California, Santa Barbara. Thank you to Mrs. Sand for organizing another great trip! Our next field trip will be for the freshmen who will travel to Westmont University.

Professional Development:

Mrs. Guthrie and Ms. Hernandez had the opportunity to attend the Middle College National Consortium, where we learned about many relevant issues and ideas for continuing to develop our program and support culturally relevant pedagogy. Additionally, Mrs. Guthrie was able to attend the California Association of Teachers of English Conference, which was a weekend filled with sessions for English teachers to expand lesson ideas and student engagement. Thank you to the leadership of Oxnard Middle College and the Oxnard Union High School District for the opportunity to continue developing as professional educators!
